This painting shows the steel-hulled bark Passat under heavy weather, based on a black-and-white photograph attributed to Capt. Hermann Piening in the collection of the J. Porter Shaw Library, San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park.  I thought the scene captured by the photograph conveyed a great sense of motion and peril – through the steeply sloping deck, violent sea, tangled lines and water pouring over the rail.
