Fall Colors

Oil on canvas, 36" x 48"

This depiction of a small sailboat is from a photograph I took at Canandaigua Lake, New York, in August 1998.  I used a “broken-color” technique, where instead of blending to produce gradations of color, the painting is made up of hundreds of small areas, each of which is rendered in one distinct hue.  Similar to a mosaic, when viewed from a distance the eye integrates all the individual “tiles” into a representational image.
